This garden is for a holiday home in Brighton. It needed to require less maintenance that the lawned garden it replaced and to provide the clients with a reliable, beautiful planting for the years to come.

One of the fabulous things about this garden is wandering around and noting the blends between stone sizes and colours, and the perfection nature provides in her plants

Here we paid careful attention in choosing the colour for the newly rendered wall to link the garden with the chalk cliffs beyond.

The garden sloped away from the house and we incorporated novel steps, made using Corten steel that curved throughout the garden, emulating ripples in the sea.

It is even more important in a hostile environment like this on the edge of the chalk cliffs of Sussex that the right plants are chosen. All plants are robust and tolerate the extreme salt laden winds and scorching summer sun.

We re-used existing oak sleeps to represent the uprights of old coastal breakwaters.

Facing one part of the wall with CorTen steel created an industrial feel to the garden, much like you find in marinas and docks on the coast. This rough raw material sits well next to the fresh painted wall. The curved deck was laid in the diagonal with cuts at an interesting acute angle.

A rich palette of oranges, pinks and purples has been used. This image in early season when the pinks taken centre stage. The cooler blues take over in mid summer.
