Those of us who have families know that keeping the family home tidy and orderly is quite a challenge – especially when there are little ones about. This obstacle of managing mess is somewhat compounded for folks living in modern, small urban apartments, where a shambles in one area of the home spreads throughout the rest of the home that much more quickly.

That was the case for this metropolitan family, whose clutter had become overwhelming due to the lack of a solid design that incorporated smart and easy storage solutions. With the help of Homelatte Interior Decorators though, this flat has been made into a cosier and more straightforwardly manageable home. Let's have a look at some of the most drastic changes that were made…

The main room before

The apartment itself was not in such bad shape; it is new with quality wooden floors and windows but primarily suffers from clutter – the result of it having no concrete design concept.

Additionally, although the child has his own bedroom, his toys have migrated permanently to the main space, which, owing to a lack of storage, means the living area has become a bit less livable for the adults.

Reclaiming the space

The choice to get rid of the sofa and replace it with a dining table, bench and bookshelf – the new centre of the room's design scheme – was a conscious attempt to turn the living space back into somewhere everyone could be instead of merely a play area for the child.

The television is no longer the focus of the room, and tasteful storage drawers and a large, wall-sized shelf make cleaning up swifter, for children and adults alike.

Office disorder

Though a small office space, it has been made to feel smaller here with altogether too much stuff crowding the desk.

Virtually no wall space is being used and, instead, the desk is covered in stuff that could easily be put out of sight, given a different organisational structure.

Office order

All of the least essential things in the office have been removed to clear space. Wooden floors have been installed, giving it a much cleaner feeling to boot.

Only the one bookshelf reigns, and wall storage and drawers mean keeping the desk clear of litter is much easier, as is staying organised!

Kids' room as ad hoc storage space

The kids' room, pre-makeover, was really just a place to put things, be it clothes or toys, there was really no solid arrangement for objects, and too many things have been accumulated in the first place – a no-no for flat dwellers generally.

Due to the chaotic state of the kid's room, it is no wonder that his toys and playtime area had migrated into the larger living area.

Introducing: the kids' room

At last, the child has a room of his own, with a new bed equipped with handy storage drawers, so that he can keep his mess in his own space and learn to stay tidy. Also, the desk has refocused the room on less video game and television-centred activities.

What an improvement! In the end, the design concept was to reclaim adult spaces, which meant engineering the kids' area into an area of its own.
