When it comes to the culinary arts, there is certainly a lot to learn. In fact, many would consider this part of the fun. It’s all about experimentation and picking up new tid bits of information as you go along.

That said; we’ve all made some pretty big mistakes in the kitchen from time to time. Whether it was mistaking the salt for sugar, nicking your finger pretty badly due to poor knife technique, or completely drying out the roast for that big dinner party, making errors in the kitchen is really the only way to learn.

This doesn’t mean, however, that you should blindly enter into a new culinary endeavour without at least attempting to educate yourself first. That’s why we’ve prepared a list of common kitchen mistakes you might be making without even realizing it. It may be best to swallow your pride on this one and have a look. You’ll thank yourself for it later.

Cutting board cleanliness

When it comes to proper cutting board care, be aware that it involves a little bit more than washing it with soap as you would with other dishware items. Indeed, warm water and soap is not enough to kill the dangerous bacteria and pathogens that could be thriving there in the aftermath of chopping meat.

We recommend sanitising your chopping boards with a mixture of salt, baking soda, and water.

Cast iron pan

There are actually several things to keep in mind when caring for your expensive cast iron pans. For one, you should never wash it with dish soap. Instead, heat the cast iron and scrape off any grease or other accumulated debris. The heat will kill any germs.

You can also add some water to the cast iron for more effective cleaning, but take note that air-drying makes it rust. Therefore, it’s best to dry it thoroughly with a dishtowel once you’re finished washing it.

Stainless steel

It’s also necessary to take special consideration when it comes to cleaning stainless steel—be it your stove, fridge, countertops, or cookware. Unfortunately, your favourite all purpose cleaner is not suitable for the job.

Instead, be sure to invest in cleaners specifically designed for cleaning stainless steel. This way, these surfaces will remain streak-free and in good shape for years to come.

Glassware in the dishwasher

Glassware won’t hold up to the extreme dishwasher temperatures for long. At best it’ll be left with streaking, and if it’s coloured glass it’ll likely grow faded over time.

Therefore, delicate or vintage glasses like these ones by J & M Collections Ltd. need to be hand washed for best results. Besides, no one wants to clean a broken glass out of the dishwasher.

Spoons in the dishwasher

While we’re at it, there are some other things no one may have told you about how to properly load the dishwasher

One of them is that when it comes to loading your spoons, don't put all of them in the same way. They get cleaner if you distribute them so that some are facing upwards and others are facing down.

Know you knives

Lastly, knives really need to be hand-washed, dried, and put away ASAP after using. Many of your expensive cutting knives simply do not belong in the dishwasher. This is especially the case if the knife in question has a wooden handle. Knives can even move around during the wash cycle, causing damage to other items in the dishwasher as well as the machine itself. Not to mention the wash cycle can warp and damage the blade of your knives over time.

There you have it. Even if you've made every single one of these mistakes, after reading this guide you are the wiser for them. Now, let's talk about the 7 essential kitchen items we just cannot live without!
