Living with your sweetheart can be a wonderful bonding experience. It’s nice to have someone to offer help and support with both the big and the small things that life throws our way. Having a companion to come home to each day after work eases the pressures we face. Cohabitation is one of the hallmarks of making a life with a significant other.

Of course, we cannot romanticise this scenario too much. When any two people spend so much time together they are bound to have a scuffle at some point. Making important household decisions with someone else can often lead to tension. When quarters are tight, all of this can be intensified if we fail to properly plan our space.

Embracing the closeness you have with your loved one is key to making cohabitation in a small home work. Equally as important is ensuring both people have what they need to function. Here are 6 storage tips for every couple living in a small apartment.

Place two small desks, rather than one big desk

For the most part, it may be a no brainer that smaller furnishings will better suit a smaller space. While this may be so, it is natural to arrive at a few roadblocks as you set out to furnish a one-room apartment for two. To be successful at this enterprise, both people must feel as if all of their needs are met. No matter your occupations, each member of the couple needs space to work on their own projects.

Therefore, we recommend situating two smaller desks in the room rather than one large one to be shared. Alternatively, you could opt for a long table with enough work space for two, as we can see in this apartment by Nicole Cromwell Interior Design.

Place a mattress in the centre of the room

A mattress large enough to accommodate two people is a rather unavoidable impediment to the floor space in your one-room apartment. You might as well embrace this piece of furniture to the best of your ability. Doing so requires thinking a bit outside the box, but that extra bit of creativity can totally be worth it.

One option is to place the bed in the centre of the room, as we can see here. This way you can situated a bookshelf at the headboard or just generally use the bed as a sort of divider between various parts of the studio apartment.

Hide all the clothes with the right storage solution

Another way to better embrace your bed is to make it do some work for you. Choosing a bed that has an under the mattress storage feature like this one can help hide away all those extra items that you and your partner don’t use on the daily. Tucking these things out of sight can make a huge difference in the amount of space you have to work with.

One two-seat sofa to cuddle and watch TV

While a sofa that converts into a bed is a viable option, it is actually possible to have a bed and a separate sofa in your one room apartment, depending on its size and the way you configure the furniture. We invite you to consider swapping a full on sofa for a cosy loveseat fit for two.

As you may have already guessed by their name, loveseats are, by nature, more conducive to cuddling. This fact makes them perfect for any couple’s apartment!

Extend your kitchen space to able to cook together

Many couples love to bond over a quality, homemade meal. In fact, cooking together might be a very important part of your relationship. It may feel like the prospect of fitting two in the kitchen at once when you live in a studio is simply impossible, but we beg to differ.

Try opting for a one-wall or L-shaped kitchen to better maximise space. If you’re working on a budget, you can always add a small work space like this one to the existing counter rather than purchasing new.

Keep things neat and simple

One of the best ways to keep both partners happy in cohabitation is for each person to make a conscious effort not to let clutter pile up. This is especially true when the living space is on the smaller side.

To keep the excess at bay, try adopting the ever-so trendy minimalist look for your shared room. This way there will simply be less stuff to get in your way. Next, keep consistent cleaning habits. Creating a routine or cleaning calendar can be helpful for this purpose.
