Today we are spoilt with another house from the incredibly talented team at Ecrit architects. When you think they couldn't out-do themselves – they do! Each and every one of their thoughtful designs exhibits a beautiful expression of traditional Japanese architectural principals in contemporary and relevant ways.

A strong connection to nature, the employment of threshold, and a flexible configuration of space; these design features all bow their head to the tenets of Japanese design. And, the incredible finesse with which they orchestrate the connections, relationships, and attention to the most subtle details is, quite possibly, second to none! Let's step inside and bask in the simple beauty they have crafted…

Between in and out

The design establishes a delightful intermediary layer in the home, a threshold between inside and out. The inner volume of the house is encased with two outer concrete shells, leaving a narrow interstitial space in between.

The space is neither entirely 'outside', nor entirely 'inside'. It establishes a gradient from the personal, interior spaces of the home out into the public, exterior realm.

A feline tour

So often homes are photographed displaying the finesse of the design, the idealised moment of conception, without due consideration given to a projection and understanding of how the space may be lived in.

Yet here, there is a priority given to the personal, to the contingency of life; perhaps, most pertinent in the presence of the family cat that is about to lead us through the various spaces!

Lounging in the green

Here, the cat takes us into the lounge area, adjacent the intermediary threshold. The concrete is exposed on the interior and complimented by a warm, natural timber floor. There is a change of flooring between the inner volume of the home and the interstitial threshold, differentiating and marking the change between the two spaces.

Sheer curtains drape from the ceiling, offering a veil of privacy. And, how wonderful is that abundance of greenery!

Bedroom nook

The bed 'room' is formed in a timber enclave that is carved into the wall. This is a wonderful example of the fluid interplay that can be crafted between division and connection. Optimising space, it uses as little of the valuable floor area as possible; yet, more than a bed on the floor, it feels distinct, discrete, differentiated, it's own little room it the wall.

Kitchen and dining

In a similar way, the kitchen and dining space are completely connected to the main volume, but it manages to achieve a feeling of separation and enclosure. It is exquisitely minimal and the play of materials is absolutely divine!

The asperity of the rough cast concrete is contrasted by smooth surfaces and rich timbers. The recessed strip lighting along the back wall, employs negative detailing to incorporate artificial lighting in the space in a very sophisticated and thoughtful manner.
