The minimalist movement has been heavily inspired by Eastern architecture, so it's no surprise that you'll find some of the most interesting and innovative examples of this trending style in Japan. Japanese homes have always focused on simplicity, tranquility, and balance with the environment, and today's home shows a respect for tradition that is in no way compromised by the innovative and groundbreaking approach employed.

The home is incredibly private, with a facade that gives nothing away, but once inside you'll find this home is filled with warmth and light, a stunning achievement from ambitious architects. Timber details give this home a sophistication that perfectly complements the modern interior, and with the living areas oriented around a courtyard it's obvious this home looks back for inspiration even as it creates something entirely new in the world of architecture. So join us as we take a tour around this magnificent home, and admire the work of true masters.

The facade

Complete privacy is a rare commodity these days, but the designers of this home have made it a priority, with the only street facing windows protected by the balcony. The sleek design of smooth lines is grounded by the timber panels leading to the front door and the single tree, adding a little bit of nature to the futuristic aesthetic. There's absolutely no hint to the warm inviting interior, but luckily we have the keys, so let's take a look!

The entrance

The decor is defined by timber touches such as that fantastic console-cabinet hybrid, with a neutral colour palette allowing the rich natural hues in the wood to really stand out. The furnishing is relatively sparse, allowing for plenty of open floor space to promote a tranquil vibe.

The kitchen

They've really outdone themselves in the kitchen, with the heavy timber panels looking incredibly impressive, while heavy rafters offer a rustic counterpoint to the modernist aesthetic. The kitchen features flat panel cabinets, reducing visual clutter and making this kitchen look sleek and contemporary, as well as ensuring there's ample storage. The way the kitchen sink extends into a dining table is a really unique idea that is economical in its use of space and helps to simplify the room.

From another angle

A flatscreen television has been mounted on the wall so that you can watch the news while enjoying your breakfast, and the differing level of the floor delineates the dining area from the kitchen. What we really love though is the large sliding doors leading into the garden that flood the kitchen with natural light, and bring the greenery outside into the decor.

The living room

The large windows continue through the living room, where a custom cabinet has been built from the same timber used for the rest of the interior to house the television. This creates a focal point in the room, and adds a quiet elegance to a feature that can otherwise look misplaced or forced. The home has hard tile floors, so a rug has been laid down in a hue that complements the red wood, and offers comfort and warmth. The brown leather sofa has been chosen to match the colour palette, showing that every little detail in this home has been carefully considered to create a unified whole.

The office

The house features very little furniture, as almost everything you need has been provided by the interior architecture, such as this fantastic work station and window box. The simplicity of the straight lines is highly impactful, while plenty of windows keep the room light and bright.

The courtyard

The best feature of this home is the courtyard. The living area wraps around the courtyard, maintaining privacy while allowing for massive windows to blend the interior and exterior spaces. The courtyard is inspired by zen gardens, with no visual clutter or unnecessary decoration, allowing the natural splendour of the spindly trees to make a strong statement.

What an amazing and inspiring home, combining the best features of traditional philosophy and modern sensibilities! If you'd like to check out another wonderful example of minimalist architecture then check this article out!
