So you've found yourself a new home, and now it's time to furnish it. It can be a daunting task, there's so many different options on the market, and there are so many different considerations to take into account! But perhaps the most difficult part of furnishing your home is figuring out how to match the different items of furniture.

There's no rules about this, and no single approach, but what it mostly comes down to the is the style you are aiming for with your decor. If you love the shabby chic look, then matching furniture is mostly a matter of instinct and personal taste, while if you want a sleek modern look it's about unity, matching sets, and contemporary forms. Today we're going to show you a few different concepts so that you're sure to find one that works for you!

1. In the shabby chic style

One of the most fun ways to mix and match furniture is to take the shabby chic approach. The rules are simple, but malleable, essentially it's all about restoring antique furniture and second hand items for a carefully considered, but thrown together look.

The best part of this is that any items will work, as long as there is some sort of similar theme, such as the mismatched wooden chairs here that combine for a quaint and charming dining room table.

2. Use natural materials

It's always a good idea to match you furniture by material, and one of the most effective and naturally beautiful ways to do this is to use organic materials. Here the heavy wooden bench seats and table go perfectly with the timber cabinets in the kitchen, as well as with the chairs on the breakfast bar.

Wood is a great material because there is a lots of variation in hue and texture, but they all look great together.

3. Black and white for elegance and class

For a classic look you can't go past a black and white colour palette, and it makes matching furniture really easy. Usually you're going to want to choose one colour as the base, and use the other for details, for example here they have a white sofa that they have matched with a black ottoman and coffee table. The look is simple, sleek, and effective.

4. The rustic look

For a hearty rustic theme try matching leather furniture with timber. Again you can take advantage of the various colours that leather comes in, because the shared material will provide thematic unity. As you can see the brown and black leather chairs pair beautifully with the timber table and surroundings.

5. As long as it matches the decor

At the breakfast bar in this home you'll find three completely different chairs, and yet they all look perfectly at home! This is because each of the different colours finds further expression in the decor, the black matches the sofa, the powder blue seat matches the walls, and the white chair echoes the light shade and pantry.

As long as the colour of the furniture fits within the colour palette chosen for the home there's a high likelihood of success, though it's always a good idea to consult with a professional!

6. Use feature pieces

One way to make a strong impression in your decor is to limit the colour palette, and then use one bright feature piece to completely change the perception of the room. Here they've used whites and greys for everything except for that remarkable yellow chair which really makes a statement, and brightens up the room.

7. Choose a single theme

This living room isn't afraid to match bold colours and patterns together because the pieces all have one thing in common; they're luxuriously comfortable! As long as the function of the furniture fits the same theme, for example the opulence of this living room, you can get a little more creative with colours and styles.

8. Use throws to tie the room together

All of the pictures on the gallery wall have yellow frames in an almost identical hue to that of the chair. The sofa still looks great in this room because neutral colours work in almost any context, but what really ties it together is the yellow throw.

If you have a piece of furniture that you love like a table or sofa that doesn't match the decor, you can still incorporate it into the decor by finding a throw that fits the palette, and covering the item up for a quick and easy fix.

Mixing and matching furniture will always have an element of trial and error, so never be afraid to try new things. For more great tips, check out this article on adding character to your living room!
