Creating, and caring for a garden can be a great hobby in itself; a fulfilling on-going project that can help you to spend more time outdoors crafting something beautiful. Even for those of us who are not avid gardeners, everyone can appreciate an attractive garden, and we all need a little time and space to relax now and again.

Obtaining professional help with the design and maintenance of your garden will undoubtedly be worth it, but you don’t have to be a landscape architect to create a garden you can enjoy.

In order to help you create your own great garden, we’ve put together a few simple tips that can help you to fulfil your garden’s potential. Read on to find out how…

1. Create a secluded space

It’s very important to create an atmosphere of serenity and seclusion in your garden. This will mean different things to different people, and it also depends on where the plot of land is, but for many people this will involve fencing, or other means of separating your garden from the outside world.

There are an array of options available, from stone walls to the strategic planting of shrubbery.

2. Create an area that you can relax in

Gardening can be a very addictive process, and it can be hard work, but never forget to enjoy the fruits of your labour.

Whether taking the form of simple respite on a bench under the shade of the trees, or entertaining guests with a meal out on the terrace, design a garden that can be enjoyed.

Consider how you and your family might like to use the garden, and design it accordingly: a play area for children, a quiet oasis in the far corner for a relaxing, or patio for guests beside the house.

3. Help nature to flourish within your garden

What could be more appealing than the sound of bird song in your garden?

Encourage birds into your garden with a bird house, and put out a little seed for them. By using a modern, colourful design a bird house can also become an attractive feature for your garden.

4. Make sure you have comfortable garden furniture

Building upon point two, you can’t relax in your garden without comfortable garden furniture.

You don't have to use the standard plastic chairs; properly treated wooden furniture is a good option, or rattan furniture with soft pillows that can be removed in case of rain. You could even get really creative and build some outdoor furniture of your own – check out this guide to building pallet furniture.

5. Don’t forget the fire

There’s nothing quite like enjoying some good company next to an open fire, or having friends over for a BBQ, so include a fire pit of grill into your garden’s design.

6. Set out on the right path

In order to protect your garden, incorporate paths into the design. There are a plethora of options available for constructing beautiful paths that can also help to define the aesthetics, as with the traditional Japanese garden.
