Japan has many longstanding traditions effecting architecture and design. Distinct and pervasive attributes and styles have become hallmarks of Japanese architecture; easily recognisable and ever beautiful.

Today, we’re taking a look at something different: a Japanese home that’s very modern in its design. Edamatsu house by Kyoto architect, Masahiko Sawamura, is a dynamic and exciting modern construction, but even in this forward thinking contemporary creation, we find elements that pay homage to the past.

 Let’s take a look…

The complex façade

The home is formed from an intriguing collection of interconnected geometric shapes, in a myriad of compartmentalised areas.

Striking to behold, the sizable home is afforded some privacy by the wall that shelters the ground floor windows of the home. The lighting accentuates the open areas, and alludes to unusual home that lies beyond while little is actually revealed.

The minimalist master bedroom

Inside we find a minimalist master bedroom, consistent with the minimarisuto trend that’s so pervasive in contemporary Japanese design.

The shoji screen at the room’s entrance provides the first glimpse of tradition design elements in this modern dwelling.

Walk this way

Outdoor walkways connect the distinct areas of the home, with whimsical circular skylights that allow patches of light to shine through.

This unusual and original design feature connects not only the separate areas of the home, but also the interior and exterior parts of the property in seamless integration.

A world without walls

We come to the heart of the home: the kitchen and dining room. The astonishing open-plan element to the design blends the garden and dining room together, and incorporates nature into the home’s design. This blurring interior space with nature and the outdoors is furthered by the vast wooden dining table that becomes the focal point of the room.

The size of the dining area is truly enviable, and with the accompanying view it’s surely the perfect place to entertain guests.

The garden is where we leaf you

Finally we arrive at the garden itself. In many ways, it is the focal point around which the home revolves. Beyond the imposing façade, the home is very much designed to feel connected to the outdoors.

The garden, like the rest of the home, is undeniably modern in its design, and yet with its many stone paths it appears to take inspiration from the traditional Japanese garden where the emphasis was placed on stones and their location, rather than the plants.

We hope you’ve enjoyed our tour of this unique, modern dwelling. If you’re in the mood for more jaw-dropping Japanese architecture, then marvel at this infusion of Japanese tradition and modern ingenuity.
