A grey but gorgeous home

As fans of all things brutalist – that severe, mostly minimalist style of architecture more present in the East than the West--we at homify are excited to talk about today's project by the KK Den Architects located in Aichi.

The plot for the home is naturally simple: two main, large modules made of concrete, facing each other off with a lush little garden courtyard between them. As we go inside, things get only slightly more intricate – but not too much, making this little house is a dream abode for minimalist who has a penchant for spaces with some serious organic balance.

Our first picture will be from the outside, where the brutalism is…

The elegance of brutalism

Outside, everything but the windows and pinewood overhand is concrete and pebble – light grey, uncomplicated and therefore serene.

All there is to notice here is the blue or grey sky, the foliage behind you, reflected in the windows--and that is the point: brutalist minimalism forces us to notice an emptiness in human structures placed within their splendorous earthly environs. Perhaps it is not for everyone, but what was genius that was immediately popular anyway?

Calm in the centre

Here between the living areas and the more private sleeping ares--between the two main modules--is a square patch of sweet green grass, accented only by a handful of wispy, thin trees, themselves a flicker of nature's minimalist side.

Only a few modern stools in black and white serve to furnish the spaces besides, making this courtyard a kind of work of art, the calm at the centre of the home.

A cafe nook in the living room

We saw this room in the first picture of the home's outer facade--rectangle windows stretch the length of this room.

In the foreground of this picture of the inside living, dining and kitchen areas, we can see the cafe-style high bar nook that looks out onto the backyard, so you can read your morning paper with your tea as if in your own private cafe.

Easy living

The balance of energy, light and colour in this main room is phenomenal. The windows bring in the light of the sun and the exuberance of the green trees.

Since the inside of the house has been built entirely with soft pinewoods, white built-in cupboards and white walls, the jet black sofa in the living area is a bold, impressive choice, and the effect of its presence in this room is almost ghost-like; that is, it contrasts so much that its specific contours are not immediately visible.

The ultimate minimalist bathroom

Perhaps by now you are not surprised by this bathroom's minimalism. The austerity of the man-made features – a simple slap of wood, a bare white porcelain, countertop sink – is streaked with abundance only because of the view onto the nature outside: a series of minimalist trees set in a pebble garden, made private with a concrete wall.

This bathroom is beautiful precisely because it look fairly effortless; that is, nature shows us that there is little assembly required, if we are willing to just use it in our designs.
