We have all been there: feeling the need to be imaginative and create but feeling completely blocked, then deflated and maybe confused about why it is so difficult to do something we want to do so much. Often, unfortunately, many of us conclude that the reason for our failure is ourselves--we must just not be very creative people. But this reasoning is totally wrong: everyone is imaginative and creation is something all of us have the innate capacity to participate in, cause we are humans.

However, like with anything else, the environment--the 'ecosystem' for creativity--must be right to help us feel ready to innovate. So in this vein, we at homify have come up with a list of five tips for making your home a more encouraging place to be imaginative and creative, starting with bringing a bit of nature into your home. Shall we begin?

1. Orient yourself towards the outside

Nature and fresh air serve as a timeless tonic for mental blocks and bad moods which hinder imaginative or inspired action. For this reason, when you carve out a particular area in your home for doing creative work, make sure it has a view of the outside, situating your most important work tools and self around windows or glass doors.

2. Plants

The more organic a space is, the more creative humans seem to feel. For this reason, we recommend trying to incorporate plants or flowers into as many rooms or spaces as possible. If you have set aside a particular space--highly recommended--then be sure the plants in that area thrive and remain alive, as dead plants may simply dampen our mood and thus creativity.

3. A working wall

A working wall is an accent wall that also serves a purpose--mainly, the purpose of facilitating the flow of ideas. The room pictured here has reserved an entire wall as a large chalkboard for drawing, writing or writing out abstract algebra equations.

4. Enough storage

For many, clutter and mess can really screw with creative work flow, as an untidy home means more distractions and less space to spread out and get down to creating. But neither does taking two or three hours to organise and clean jive with fertile work. So, to keep things clear and clean as easily as possible, the best solution is to install really great storage.

5. Face away from wall

To optimise creative capacity in your home, arrange your furniture--especially your work desk--so that it does not face a wall. It is better that you are facing either a window looking out or an open room to prevent blockages and keep a sense of expansive flow from being stunted.
