You don't necessarily have to have a small or tiny home to be considering ways to make it look larger. Even average homes can have both structural and decorative qualities that seemingly cut down on the amount of space and openness that most homeowners crave.

There are both cheap and easy ways to make your home look far bigger than it actually is – these can include everything from new light fixtures, to switching from curtains to sheers and painting everything white and light.

Think your home is small, or needs to look larger? Take a look at these wonderful tiny homes and the ways in which they can truly include everything – they're sure to change your mind!

Keep the colours limited

Similarly to how too many furnishings and accessories can clutter up a space and make it seem amazingly smaller, colours can have the same effect! Adding too many colours can create a visual environment that is distracting, and needless to say, tacky.

Take a look at the neutrals in this living room – you have a vast array of materials – wood, concrete, metals and even soft plushness. Yet, the only colours that truly stick out are the greys and greens.

Take advantage of white

Perhaps the best colour of them all for a plethora of reasons – white is your new best friend when it comes to opening up spaces. White is clean, minimal and works incredibly well with both direct and indirect light – and also both artificial and natural light.

You can never have too much white when it comes to both interior and exterior walls – remember that!

Don't use large furniture

Looking for a way to instantly make your home seem smaller, over-crowded and horribly cluttered? Large furnishings will do just that.  Of course smaller homes need furnishings too, but you just might have to put more thought into it.

Stick with small- to medium-sized furnishings and especially retro-style furniture which tends to be smaller in size – like cute sofas and love seats, as well as smaller mid-century and Danish coffee tables and accent tables.

Smaller never means sacrificing style and quality – trust us!

Keep the style simple

Simple is best for smaller homes,  especially if you're attempting to make your smaller home look larger! Stick with neutral colour palettes on the interior walls, as well as the furnishings.

Still want to add some colour? Consider plants, flowers and smaller accessories like pillows, wall hangings and textiles as the perfect way to add small pops of colour without being too obnoxious.

Use indirect lighting

Some might be shocked to hear this, but not all lighting is so great, especially for smaller spaces. Direct light can be harsh, not only on design schemes, but your eyesight as well. Also, if you tend to live in warmer climates, direct lighting can add unnecessary heat to the interior of your home!

Indirect lighting is best when opening up spaces – think about keeping windows open for both fresh air and sunlight and using sheers for privacy and indirect lighting.  Reflective surfaces (which we will discuss below) are another great way to bring more indirect light into your home!

Reflective surfaces can really help

With the use of both indirect lighting and a white/light colour palette, you should already be ahead in the design game when it comes to enlarging your space. It is important to note that professional designers will also give you one more tip when attempting to make your home look a bit larger – reflective surfaces. Think about incorporating mirrors, metals and metallic accessories and even tiles and floor materials with a sheen can help as well.

Remember, think wide, open spaces, bright colours and lots of light as the best ways to fool those into thinking your home is much larger than what it is! An open-concept plan is another way to make sure your home always seems large and open for all, while remaining welcoming!
